It’s not terribly uncommon for the guide sleeve on the Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II to be worn. The guide sleeve is integral to the Tensilkut machine’s ability to create the same specimen repeatedly, without the skills a full charge machinist offers.

We do keep guide sleeves in a variety of sizes in stock for shipment when our customers need them. They’re easy to replace, keeping your testing program running smoothly.
Guide Sleeves for the Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II
Tensilkut has the capacity to accurately machine tensile specimens from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics from .002″ thickness up to .250″ or more, depending upon the model of the machine and the hardness of the material. The Tensilkut series is fast; test specimen preparation can be completed in as little as 3 minutes, depending upon the material and its thickness. The machined edges are so finely finished that no hand finishing is required. The capacity to satisfactorily machine such light gauges as .002″ thick allows testing of many materials for which specimen preparation would otherwise be significantly more difficult.
Some of the bars cut on Tensilkut machines include ASTM D638 Type I tensile bars, ASTM D412 Die C tensile bars, ASTM D1855 Type L Tensile-Impact specimens, ASTM D256 Impact specimens, and ASTM D5379 Shear Test Specimens.

ASTM D638 Type IV is a small tensile specimen used in testing plastics. It’s a difficult sample to cut, because it has both an inside and outside radius.

Tensilkut Engineering makes Master Templates which will work with any Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II to prepare samples in accordance with ASTM D638 Type IV. Each template is sized with a top bar which matches the height of the control head for the Tensilkut machine with which it will be used.
Tensilkut Master Templates 50-92, 50-93 and 50-94 for preparing rubber test specimens in accordance with ASTM D412 Die C: Available for use on Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II models.

Recently, a customer sent us some composite strips to be cut into ASTM D638 Type I tensile samples. We used the Tensilkut II, and the process was very fast and easy.
Tensilkut machines are sized for location in your testing laboratory, to be used by technicians without machining experience. The Tensilkut II is a floor model, manually operated machine; table model Tensilkut I machines are also available for labs with less space available. Visit our website at www.tensilkut.com or fill out the contact form below for more information on how Tensilkut can make your tensile specimen preparation easier!
The Tensilkut II is an efficient, cost effective way to prepare tensile samples. Recently, we cut some specimens from fiber filled composites for demonstration; the attached video shows the cutting of two ASTM D638 Type I tensile bars, from start to finish, in about 8 minutes.
This video also shows measuring of the specimen during the cutting process, which is not necessary with a properly adjusted Tensilkut machine and master template, but does demonstrate the accuracy of the system. Tensilkut machines are designed to be operated by lab personnel without previous machining experience. Please contact us today for further information on how we can help you with your testing program.
The Tensilkut II is used to easily prepare flat tensile, compression, flexural and other specimens from metals and non-metallics. This machine is designed for operation in the testing lab by technicians without previous machining experience.
The starting blank is inserted into the Tensilkut Master Template, and the clamping screws are tightened as shown in this video. The micrometer dial on the Tensilkut control head is set to its starting position, and a series of light passes are taken to cut the material from each side of the specimen. When the correct tensile specimen dimensions are achieved, the micrometer dial will stop turning, thus preventing cutting an undersized test specimen. After removing the completed ASTM E8 or other specimen from the master template, the tensile bar is ready for immediate testing.
