The 10-13 Tensilkut I is the same size and model as the original Tensilkut machine first made back in 1955. This machine has the smallest motor of any Tensilkut machine, whether a Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II, and consequently the lowest cutting capacity. It also, true to the Tensilkut heritage, does an excellent job of preparing tensile specimens from thin materials. While we don’t recommend this model for cutting steel samples of more than 1/8″ thickness, and certainly not for harder materials, it does a superb job at preparing aluminum and softer materials of up to 1/4″ thickness.

The 10-13 Tensilkut I is a fine choice for a small testing lab, where space is at a premium, or where only a limited number of specimens are needed. As with other Tensilkut machines, this machine will prepare specimens in a wide variety of specifications, including ASTM E8, ASTM A370, ASTM D638, or whatever you might need. Contact us for more information and a quote, or visit our Tensilkut website for more information on this and other equipment to make your lab more productive.

It’s not terribly uncommon for the guide sleeve on the Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II to be worn. The guide sleeve is integral to the Tensilkut machine’s ability to create the same specimen repeatedly, without the skills a full charge machinist offers.

We do keep guide sleeves in a variety of sizes in stock for shipment when our customers need them. They’re easy to replace, keeping your testing program running smoothly.

We had an inquiry from a customer for replacement templates for their Tensilkut I. They couldn’t find a nameplate containing the model and serial number of the machine, so they sent us a photo instead.

Tensilkut I from the early 1960s
Judging from the color and the lack of a stainless steel top plate, this machine was built in the early 1960s. A corner is missing, the phenolic plate is broken on one corner, yet the machine still works well. There is at least one other unit of this vintage still in everyday use. After 50 plus years, that’s pretty good.
And, yes, we were able to supply templates to this customer.

Tensilkut has the capacity to accurately machine tensile specimens from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics from .002″ thickness up to .250″ or more, depending upon the model of the machine and the hardness of the material. The Tensilkut series is fast; test specimen preparation can be completed in as little as 3 minutes, depending upon the material and its thickness. The machined edges are so finely finished that no hand finishing is required. The capacity to satisfactorily machine such light gauges as .002″ thick allows testing of many materials for which specimen preparation would otherwise be significantly more difficult.

Some of the bars cut on Tensilkut machines include ASTM D638 Type I tensile bars, ASTM D412 Die C tensile bars, ASTM D1855 Type L Tensile-Impact specimens, ASTM D256 Impact specimens, and ASTM D5379 Shear Test Specimens.

ASTM D638 Type IV is a small tensile specimen used in testing plastics. It’s a difficult sample to cut, because it has both an inside and outside radius.

Tensilkut Engineering makes Master Templates which will work with any Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II to prepare samples in accordance with ASTM D638 Type IV. Each template is sized with a top bar which matches the height of the control head for the Tensilkut machine with which it will be used.

Tensilkut Master Templates 50-92, 50-93 and 50-94 for preparing rubber test specimens in accordance with ASTM D412 Die C: Available for use on Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II models.

The Tensilkut I is the original machine designed to prepare tensile and other test specimens from a wide variety of materials. This precision machine is based on the unique concept of utilizing super high cutter rotation speeds to achieve dramatic reductions in chip load and cutting pressures; the Tensi8lbit produces 1000 cuts per second with the individual chips becoming fine shavings. This high speed shearing action eliminates cold working or heat induced distortion to the sample edges. Precise test specimens can be Tensilkut milled form aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, pliable plastics, glass filled laminates, and a wide variety of other materials. The configuration of the specimens is traced from a precision master template to achieve contoru duplication to with plus or minus .001″ (.025mm).

In this day of instant electronic communication, it’s hard to believe that 60+ years ago, not only was everything mailed, but Tensilkut’s catalog, when it arrived in the mailbox, contained a tensile test bar which had been cut on the Tensilkut.

The 1955 Tensilkut catalog included a drawing of the only tensile bar we made at the time, along with an actual specimen!
I don’t imagine the founder of Tensilkut ever imagined a time when we could not only send information to customers nearly instantly, but also a time when we’d be able to make videos available for people to see whenever they wished. Despite sea changes in communication, the need for his original machine remains very real – and at least one of the machines made in his first couple of years remains in service today.

Recently, while browsing the Tensilkut Ancient History file, our catalog from October 1, 1956 appeared. It was a simple affair, with a heavy sheet as front and back cover, and a single sheet describing the entire Tensilkut line, consisting of the Tensilkut (one model only) and its template. The cover was adorned with a four-color photograph, glossy, of course (at a time when color photography was less common and rather expensive).

The cover of the original Tensilkut catalog, from October 1, 1956!
How far we have progressed today, to our line containing numerous models of the Tensilkut I, Tensilkut II and CNC Tensilkut III for preparing flat tensile specimens, along with the Tensilgrind for high hardness flat samples, and machines for round and notched test specimen preparation!
Visit our website at www.tensilkut.com to see how greatly our line of equipment has expanded, and how we can assist you with your test specimen preparation needs.
