Tensilkut: Tensile Sample Preparation Gold Standard

Tensilkut has the capacity to accurately machine tensile specimens from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics from .002″ thickness up to .250″ or more, depending upon the model of the machine and the hardness of the material.  The Tensilkut series is fast; test specimen preparation can be completed in as little as 3 minutes, depending upon the material and its thickness.  The machined edges are so finely finished that no hand finishing is required.  The capacity to satisfactorily machine such light gauges as .002″ thick allows testing of many materials for which specimen preparation would otherwise be significantly more difficult.

The Original Tensile Sample Preparation Solution

The Tensilkut I is the original machine designed to prepare tensile and other test specimens from a wide variety of materials.  This precision machine is based on the unique concept of utilizing super high cutter rotation speeds to achieve dramatic reductions in chip load and cutting pressures; the Tensi8lbit produces 1000 cuts per second with the individual chips becoming fine shavings.  This high speed shearing action eliminates cold working or heat induced distortion to the sample edges.  Precise test specimens can be Tensilkut milled form aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, pliable plastics, glass filled laminates, and a wide variety of other materials.  The configuration of the specimens is traced from a precision master template to achieve contoru duplication to with plus or minus .001″ (.025mm).

Tensilsaw for Fiber Reinforced Plastic Strips

New on YouTube: the video demonstration of the Tensilsaw being used to prepare strips of fiber reinforced plastic from 12″ square plaques.  The material saws quickly and easily, with minimal operator training.

After t

he strips have been prepared, they can be used for flexural testing, or any test requiring a straight strip.  Alternatively, and frequently, the Tensilsaw is used to cut blanks for insertion into the template, to be cut using the Tensilkut II or Tensilkut I into tensile bars.  A common specimen to be prepared in this manner is ASTM D638, or ASTM D695 tensile bars.  Another use for such strips would be for insertion into the V-Mill template, to be notched for Iosipescu shear testing in accordance with ASTM D7078 or ASTM D5379.

ASTM D695 Compression Testing

Preparing the ASTM D695 Specimen for compression testing is a two step process.  First, the gauge section must be cut in the blank, using one of the Tensilkut Master Templates designed specifically for this purpose.

After the gauge section has been cut, the specimen is inserted into the Tensilkut Master Template which cuts the ends square and parallel at 3.13″, in accordance with ASTM D695.  Different templates are available for  Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II machines.

Cutting Specimens from Plaques

Some customers wish to cut specimens from plaques, using the CNC Tensilkut III, without first cutting the pieces into strips. This unit can be designed to do just that.

The machine is programmed to cut the specimens you need in the layout you desire. All clamps are custom made, and, as shown in this photograph, this plaque will be cut into ASTM D638 Type I specimens, cutting the entire length of each bar.

Often, a plaque which is to be cut into all tensile bars is sawn into strips using the Tensilsaw before the pieces are clamped into the machine. More commonly, when a customer wishes to cut specimens from a plaque, he wants several types of specimens, including tensile, flexural and impact blanks.

Although this can be done for thin plaques of metal, it is not recommended, as the cutting time is significantly longer, and the cutter wear will be much greater. Using the Tensilshear to cut metal strips to be clamped in the CNC Tensilkut III is much more efficient.
