CNC Tensilkut III for Hardened Steel

September 26, 2017

This is a video demonstration of the CNC Tensilkut III cutting out the gauge section for one specimen of 1.4mm thick hardened steel. The starting size was 3/4″; the finished specimen is in accordance with ASTM E8, with the .500″ x 2″ gauge section, and the included .003″ taper.

This demonstration is 8 minutes long, and shows the entire cutting process.  Please contact us for more information or a quotation.

RIP, Cassini

September 15, 2017

In 1997, the Cassini spacecraft was launched, with the expressed mission of exploring Saturn.  For the past 7 years, it has done that, sending back spectacular images of our ringed neighbor, along with chemical details about the atmosphere of the planet and its moons, and the composition of its rings.  Today, it crashed into the surface of Saturn, sending a bit of final information on its way to oblivion.

Why does this matter to Tensilkut?  Because the Jet Propulsion Lab was a customer, as were many of its suppliers, and the Tensilkut system was used to test the materials traveling into space for nearly 20 years.  We are proud to have contributed to this exciting voyage in our own, peripheral way.  RIP, Cassini, and thanks for the memories.

How Long will a Tensilkut Machine Last?

September 13, 2017

We had an inquiry from a customer for replacement templates for their Tensilkut I.  They couldn’t find a nameplate containing the model and serial number of the machine, so they sent us a photo instead.

Tensilkut I from the early 1960s

Tensilkut I from the early 1960s

Judging from the color and the lack of a stainless steel top plate, this machine was built in the early 1960s.  A corner is missing, the phenolic plate is broken on one corner, yet the machine still works well.  There is at least one other unit of this vintage still in everyday use.  After 50 plus years, that’s pretty good.

And, yes, we were able to supply templates to this customer.

To Cut Straight Strips

September 12, 2017

Straight strips are a very valuable commodity in the laboratory.  In addition to needing a straight strip as the basis for cutting a test specimen, whether tensile, compression or another test, the straight piece is necessary for flexural testing, and is very valuable for other tests, including hardness testing.  The Tensilsaw is a very convenient way to cut strips from small plaques of plastic, fiberglass, composites, glass laminates and other non-metallic materials.

September 11, 2017

16 years ago was the third attack upon American soil since our great nation was founded. Today, our hearts are with those who survived the collapse of the Twin Towers, and with the families of those who were lost in the Towers, the Pentagon, and especially on the 3 jet liners. Our gratitude to the families of the passengers on the fourth jet, who bravely took over and crashed that plane to save our nation’s capital from further destruction. We will never forget.

Notched Samples: Impact and Shear Testing

September 7, 2017

Tensilkut is known for high quality, accurate machines for preparing flat and round tensile bars.  But we also build machines for notching specimens, which is one of the hardest things to accomplish.  For Impact specimens in accordance with ASTM A370 for metal bars, we offer the Impactkut, a fast, accurate and durable machine which broaches the notches with a single stroke of the 24″ long

broach tool.

ASTM D256 specimens are used for testing plastic or composite impact specimens; the Impactmill notches those specimens in one pass through the machine.

For Iosipescu Shear Test specimens in accordance with ASTM D5379 or ASTM D7078, the V-Mill notches both sides of the specimen quickly, with the notches perfectly aligned.  This machine was developed in response to customers in the aerospace industry, who were among the earliest to suffer the difficulties of preparing these notches.

Tensilkut: Tensile Sample Preparation Gold Standard

September 5, 2017

Tensilkut has the capacity to accurately machine tensile specimens from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics from .002″ thickness up to .250″ or more, depending upon the model of the machine and the hardness of the material.  The Tensilkut series is fast; test specimen preparation can be completed in as little as 3 minutes, depending upon the material and its thickness.  The machined edges are so finely finished that no hand finishing is required.  The capacity to satisfactorily machine such light gauges as .002″ thick allows testing of many materials for which specimen preparation would otherwise be significantly more difficult.

Tensilkut test bars

Some of the bars cut on Tensilkut machines include ASTM D638 Type I tensile bars, ASTM D412 Die C tensile bars, ASTM D1855 Type L Tensile-Impact specimens, ASTM D256 Impact specimens, and ASTM D5379 Shear Test Specimens.

Happy Labor Day!

September 1, 2017

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September.  It was begun as a day to celebrate labor, and we honor that tradition by giving our team the day off, in hopes that they will spend the last weekend of the summer enjoying time with their families.  We at Tensilkut Engineering hope everyone who reads this has a safe and enjoyable weekend.

ASTM D638 Type IV Test Specimens

August 31, 2017

ASTM D638 Type IV is a small tensile specimen used in testing plastics.  It’s a difficult sample to cut, because it has both an inside and outside radius.

ASTM D638 Type IV tensile bars

Tensilkut Engineering makes Master Templates which will work with any Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II to prepare samples in accordance with ASTM D638 Type IV. Each template is sized with a top bar which matches the height of the control head for the Tensilkut machine with which it will be used.

Tensilkut Master Templates 50-92, 50-93 and 50-94 for preparing rubber test specimens in accordance with ASTM D412 Die C: Available for use on Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II models.
