Complex Round Test Bars

In addition to being able to turn perfect shouldered, button head and threaded tensile bars, Tensilkut’s CNC Tensilathe has been used for preparing more complicated, proprietary test specimens.  This one is a fine example:

This is a bar designed by a customer for a specific test of longevity of Hastelloy.  Each of the end sections on both ends is tapered, as is the gauge section.  This test specimen is beautiful in its complexity.

Of course, because it was turned from Hastelloy, accommodations had to be made in the program; when the program would turn steel or stainless specimens perfectly, the deflection from the Hastelloy caused it to be oversized.  When we program your specimens for the CNC Tensilathe or the CNC Tensilkut III, we want to receive several samples of your actual material, so our programs will accurately prepare your test bars, regardless of its properties.  Machines which accurately prepare physical test specimens are the only things we’ve ever built, and we pride ourselves on offering the best sample preparation equipment available.

Turning Round Tensile Bars

Turning round tensile test bars has always been a difficult and tedious process.  A full charge machinist can turn a test specimen using a lathe, but it will take some time, and, unless the machinist is fastidious, it may not be within the tolerances required by the specification.  Additionally, since machinists will often turn bars using only the largest possible passes, the bar will likely need hand finishing to remove distortion caused by the turning process.

Tensilkut has two machines designed to allow you to turn round tensile bars in accordance with ASTM E8, ASTM A370, JIS, DIN and ISO specifications in the lab.  Technicians without previous machining experience can learn to run these machines in short order; as with our other machines, these machines are supplied with a self-instruction manual, so it can be used by different operators as time goes on.

The Tensilathe/505 is our semi-automatic tracing lathe.  It operates from a Master Template, which controls the shape and dimensions of the specimen.  The operator needs only to dial in each cut to prepare a perfect tensile bar.

The CNC Tensilathe is the automated round test specimen preparation system.  This machine runs on a Windows-based microcomputer; specimen preparation is accomplished with a point and click software system.  After setting up the specimen, the operator is free to complete other tasks while the sample is turned automatically.

Tensilkut: Tensile Sample Preparation Gold Standard

Tensilkut has the capacity to accurately machine tensile specimens from ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics from .002″ thickness up to .250″ or more, depending upon the model of the machine and the hardness of the material.  The Tensilkut series is fast; test specimen preparation can be completed in as little as 3 minutes, depending upon the material and its thickness.  The machined edges are so finely finished that no hand finishing is required.  The capacity to satisfactorily machine such light gauges as .002″ thick allows testing of many materials for which specimen preparation would otherwise be significantly more difficult.

The Original Tensile Sample Preparation Solution

The Tensilkut I is the original machine designed to prepare tensile and other test specimens from a wide variety of materials.  This precision machine is based on the unique concept of utilizing super high cutter rotation speeds to achieve dramatic reductions in chip load and cutting pressures; the Tensi8lbit produces 1000 cuts per second with the individual chips becoming fine shavings.  This high speed shearing action eliminates cold working or heat induced distortion to the sample edges.  Precise test specimens can be Tensilkut milled form aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, pliable plastics, glass filled laminates, and a wide variety of other materials.  The configuration of the specimens is traced from a precision master template to achieve contoru duplication to with plus or minus .001″ (.025mm).

Tensilkut Catalog, Circa 1955

In this day of instant electronic communication, it’s hard to believe that 60+ years ago, not only was everything mailed, but Tensilkut’s catalog, when it arrived in the mailbox, contained a tensile test bar which had been cut on the Tensilkut.

The 1955 Tensilkut catalog included a drawing of the only tensile bar we made at the time, along with an actual specimen!

I don’t imagine the founder of Tensilkut ever imagined a time when we could not only send information to customers nearly instantly, but also a time when we’d be able to make videos available for people to see whenever they wished.  Despite sea changes in communication, the need for his original machine remains very real – and at least one of the machines made in his first couple of years remains in service today.

The Tensilsaw, with the 60-66 diamond plated Tensilsaw Blade, is perfect for cutting fiber filled plaques into strips, as shown in this video.

The Tensilsaw cuts through this sheet very efficiently, creating strips which are ready to be cut into tensile bars on the Tensilkut I, Tensilkut II or CNC Tensilkut III, notched for izod impact testing in accordance with ASTM D256, or used for flexural or other tests requiring a straight strip of a precise width.  The width is controlled via precision spacers, ensuring that the width doesn’t change unless you wish to change it.

Tensilkut II

The Tensilkut II is an efficient, cost effective way to prepare tensile samples.  Recently, we cut some specimens from fiber filled composites for demonstration; the attached video shows the cutting of two ASTM D638 Type I tensile bars, from start to finish, in about 8 minutes.

This video also shows measuring of the specimen during the cutting process, which is not necessary with a properly adjusted Tensilkut machine and master template, but does demonstrate the accuracy of the system.  Tensilkut machines are designed to be operated by lab personnel without previous machining experience.  Please contact us today for further information on how we can help you with your testing program.

Tensilsaw for Fiber Reinforced Plastic Strips

New on YouTube: the video demonstration of the Tensilsaw being used to prepare strips of fiber reinforced plastic from 12″ square plaques.  The material saws quickly and easily, with minimal operator training.

he strips have been prepared, they can be used for flexural testing, or any test requiring a straight strip.  Alternatively, and frequently, the Tensilsaw is used to cut blanks for insertion into the template, to be cut using the Tensilkut II or Tensilkut I into tensile bars.  A common specimen to be prepared in this manner is ASTM D638, or ASTM D695 tensile bars.  Another use for such strips would be for insertion into the V-Mill template, to be notched for Iosipescu shear testing in accordance with ASTM D7078 or ASTM D5379.
