Special Master Templates

For nearly as long as Tensilkut machines have existed, people have wanted to prepare custom test specimens.  These are some of the more unusual ones:

This is a special template to cut micro tensile bars from very tiny pieces of materials.  Typically, this is the type of test specimen one might use if cutting from precious metals, or from “historic” material which has been in storage, and to which a comparison with a modern material is desired.  These are also used to prepare samples from materials which are irregularly shaped, and therefore, only a small piece can be obtained for the test.Micro Tensile Template 006

I truly have no idea who ordered these Special Templates, or what the purpose was of having multiple reduced sections.  I only know that these are very interesting in appearance, and the story behind them must have been somewhat intriguing.  Note that these specimens have holes in them for pin loaded grips; Tensilkut Engineering can install hardened bushings for guiding the drilling of such holes.

ASTM D638 Type IV Test Specimens

ASTM D638 Type IV is a small tensile specimen used in testing plastics.  It’s a difficult sample to cut, because it has both an inside and outside radius.

Composite Tensile Test Sample Preparation

Recently, a customer sent us some composite strips to be cut into ASTM D638 Type I tensile samples.  We used the Tensilkut II, and the process was very fast and easy.

Demonstration of the Tensilkut II

The Tensilkut II is used to easily prepare flat tensile, compression, flexural and other specimens from metals and non-metallics.  This machine is designed for operation in the testing lab by technicians without previous machining experience.

The starting blank is inserted into the Tensilkut Master Template, and the clamping screws are tightened as shown in this video.  The micrometer dial on the Tensilkut control head is set to its starting position, and a series of light passes are taken to cut the material from each side of the specimen.  When the correct tensile specimen dimensions are achieved, the micrometer dial will stop turning, thus preventing cutting an undersized test specimen.  After removing the completed ASTM E8 or other specimen from the master template, the tensile bar is ready for immediate testing.

ASTM D695 Compression Testing

Preparing the ASTM D695 Specimen for compression testing is a two step process.  First, the gauge section must be cut in the blank, using one of the Tensilkut Master Templates designed specifically for this purpose.

After the gauge section has been cut, the specimen is inserted into the Tensilkut Master Template which cuts the ends square and parallel at 3.13″, in accordance with ASTM D695.  Different templates are available for  Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II machines.
