To Cut Straight Strips

Straight strips are a very valuable commodity in the laboratory.  In addition to needing a straight strip as the basis for cutting a test specimen, whether tensile, compression or another test, the straight piece is necessary for flexural testing, and is very valuable for other tests, including hardness testing.  The Tensilsaw is a very convenient way to cut strips from small plaques of plastic, fiberglass, composites, glass laminates and other non-metallic materials.

The Tensilsaw, with the 60-66 diamond plated Tensilsaw Blade, is perfect for cutting fiber filled plaques into strips, as shown in this video.

The Tensilsaw cuts through this sheet very efficiently, creating strips which are ready to be cut into tensile bars on the Tensilkut I, Tensilkut II or CNC Tensilkut III, notched for izod impact testing in accordance with ASTM D256, or used for flexural or other tests requiring a straight strip of a precise width.  The width is controlled via precision spacers, ensuring that the width doesn’t change unless you wish to change it.

Tensilsaw for Fiber Reinforced Plastic Strips

New on YouTube: the video demonstration of the Tensilsaw being used to prepare strips of fiber reinforced plastic from 12″ square plaques.  The material saws quickly and easily, with minimal operator training.

he strips have been prepared, they can be used for flexural testing, or any test requiring a straight strip.  Alternatively, and frequently, the Tensilsaw is used to cut blanks for insertion into the template, to be cut using the Tensilkut II or Tensilkut I into tensile bars.  A common specimen to be prepared in this manner is ASTM D638, or ASTM D695 tensile bars.  Another use for such strips would be for insertion into the V-Mill template, to be notched for Iosipescu shear testing in accordance with ASTM D7078 or ASTM D5379.

The Tensilshear is an easy way to cut strips from small sheets of metal, including aluminum, brass, steel, and even harder materials.

A pair of micrometer adjustments on the back move the stop to enable you to simply push your sheet of up to 10″ wide metal under the blade until it reaches the stop, make sure it’s firmly in place, and cut off a strip.  The process can be repeated for as many strips as you need. It is a compact, manually operated unit, requiring neither electrical nor air hookup to operate.

The Tensilshear will shear strips from 1/8″ (3mm) thick aluminum or materials of similar hardness, and up to 2mm thick steel.  The hardened, precision ground blades are adjustable to eliminate virtually all edge burring problems.  The video below shows the Tensilshear being used to shear strips from 2mm thick hardened steel.

Tensilshear

Tensilshear is a rugged hand shear designed specifically to cut straight strips from sheets of metal.  Strips can rapidly be sheared from sheets of light foil, steel up to 1/16″ thick, or aluminum up to 1/8″ thick.  These strips can then be inserted into templates for the Tensilkut I or Tensilkut II, and cut into tensile specimens.  Other applications include preparing blanks for paint, corrosion or similar tests.

The hardened blade on the Tensilshear ensures smooth, burr-free strips.  Micrometer gauges at the back enable the user to set the strip width accurately to best suit his needs.
